Welcome to The Green House!
The Crestone Solar Corps illustrates the cooperation between community and our non-profit SALC. Students from the local Charter school earned as they learned about renewable technologies in emulation of Auroville's work with its surrounding villages for the progress of all. Together we retrofitted an old potting shed near Savitri House, turning it into a snazzy solar greenhouse.
A SUSTINABLE FUTURE WITH PASSIVE SOLAR.
Sunia Beelendorf, Finn Brady and Jade Swordy were diligent workers, measuring, sawing and nailing at impossible angles, under the careful supervision of Clay Bridgford and Brian Dyer, one of the SALC Board. When asked what they liked best, Jade said, “tearing everything down”. She liked “getting a basic idea of how to build something – maybe I could handle building a dog house”. Finn said he liked putting up rafters, and “it was nice to see the greenhouse coming together after destroying it.” Sunia said, “I enjoyed learning how to use power tools properly and being able to deconstruct and reconstruct and remodel. You can use the knowledge in future job opportunities and knowing how to fix your own house.” Following renovation of the rotted out shed, the student workers installed passive solar elements.
Gratitude and many thanks to the Foundation for World Education and the Saguache County Tax Revenue grant, which is paying the students to earn-while-they-learn. Student wages will go into the school “trip fund” for their adventure to Greece. This is part of the Charter School Mentorship program directed by David Billesbach.
Sunia, Finn, and Jade, Enjoy
